Layover tours from Istanbul Airport (IST)

Our guarantee: We have you back at the airport 2h 30 before departure. If your inbound flight is delayed, we reschedule or cancel at no cost.

Istanbul Airport sits on the European side, about 1h from Sultanahmet by private vehicle outside the worst traffic. Add 45 minutes from touchdown to the car and our 2h 30 return buffer, and the minimum connection we take out of the terminal is 7 hours.

What fits, by layover length

7 hours: about 1h 45 in the Old City, no paid entries. 8 hours: about 2h 45 — the walking circuit, Grand Bazaar and one paid site. 10 hours or more: about 4h 45 — the full Old City, optional Bosphorus ferry, Kadıköy from 12 hours. Each has its own page with the detail.

Baggage and transit

Most international-to-international passengers do not need to collect baggage; your bags move through. If you must collect them, the airport's left-luggage counter in the arrivals hall holds them, and small cabin bags can ride in the vehicle. Allow extra time for the carousel.

Traffic honesty

The IST–Old City run is quickest mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Early evening westbound and Friday afternoons are slow, and we quote the longer time rather than the optimistic one. Our planner uses the conservative figure.

Your driver waits at the international arrivals hall with a name sign; the guide joins in Sultanahmet. Drop-off at IST departures 2h 30 before your flight.

Don't book this if…

  • Your connection is under 7 hours.
  • You are on a single Turkish Airlines ticket with a layover that matches a Touristanbul slot and you are happy in a group — take the free tour.
  • Your layover is overnight with no sites open — an airport hotel is the better spend.

Turkish Airlines' free Touristanbul tour — how is this different?

Touristanbul is Turkish Airlines' free group tour for passengers connecting through Istanbul Airport on a single Turkish Airlines ticket. It is a good programme. Ours is different in five ways: it is private to your party; you choose the route; there is no fixed departure slot to match; your guide is licensed and speaks your language; and if your inbound flight is late we re-plan around the hours you still have instead of leaving without you. If you qualify for Touristanbul and its slot matches your flights, take it — we will say so.

If your connection is at Sabiha Gökçen, read the SAW page — the routing is different and Kadıköy market is quieter on Sunday mornings; ferries thin out in winter.
