Istanbul Layover Tours — What You Can See Between Flights

How many hours do I need to leave the airport?
From Istanbul Airport (IST) you need at least 6 to 7 hours between flights. From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), at least 9 to 11 hours — the transfer crosses to the European side and takes nearly three hours for the round trip alone.
Below those figures we will tell you honestly that leaving the airport isn't worth it.
That minimum includes everything, not just the drive: clearing passport control on arrival, collecting or storing baggage, the transfer each way, and checking in again for your onward flight. The time you actually spend in the city is what remains after all of it.
How long is the transfer from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Sultanahmet?
The transfer from Istanbul Airport to the Old City takes roughly 50 minutes by private vehicle. Traffic on the coastal road and around the Golden Horn can extend this in the morning and early evening, so we build the transfer into the itinerary rather than assuming a fixed number.
Before that, allow 30 to 50 minutes from landing to reaching the vehicle — passport control, and baggage if you have any. How long it takes depends on how many flights land at once. So from touchdown to standing in Sultanahmet is realistically an hour and a half, not fifty minutes.
How long is the transfer from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) to the Old City?
From Sabiha Gökçen the transfer is longer — about 1 hour 25 minutes to the Old City. SAW sits on the Asian side, so the route crosses the Bosphorus, and bridge traffic is the main variable. Plan on close to three hours of driving for the round trip alone.
Because of that, SAW layovers rarely suit a standard itinerary. Send us your flight numbers and connection times and we will put together a tailor-made programme around the hours you actually have.
For shorter SAW connections there is a smarter option: an Asian-side programme on request — Kadıköy, Üsküdar and the Çamlıca hill — so you see Istanbul without crossing the bridge at all. Ask us when you send your flight times.
Is Turkish Airlines' free Touristanbul tour better?
Touristanbul is Turkish Airlines' free tour programme for passengers on long layovers.
On Touristanbul you follow a group of around 45 people on a fixed route and a fixed clock. With a private guide you draw your own itinerary. The difference is à la carte versus a set fast-food menu.
That said, be honest with yourself about which you want. Touristanbul is free, it is run by the airline, and if the timing slips the responsibility sits with them. For a first visit on a tight budget, that is a reasonable trade. What it cannot do is stop at the one thing you actually came to see, move at your pace, or change plan when your flight lands late.
The eligibility rules matter here. Touristanbul is only for passengers connecting from one international flight to another at Istanbul Airport, on a single Turkish Airlines booking, with a layover of 6 to 24 hours. Codeshare tickets don't qualify. It doesn't run from Sabiha Gökçen at all. You register at the Touristanbul desk on arrival rather than booking online, and your flight times have to line up with one of the four scheduled routes — which were revised on 1 May 2026, so check the current timings against your connection.
If you don't meet those conditions, or your connection doesn't match a tour departure, a private guide is the alternative rather than the upgrade.

Do I need a visa for a layover in Istanbul?
Visa requirements depend on your nationality and change from time to time, so we won't state rules here that might be out of date by the time you read them. Check the official Turkish government site at evisa.gov.tr, or ask us and we will point you to the right page for your passport.
One thing worth knowing: the 72-hour visa exemption you may have read about applies to cruise passengers who arrive and leave on the same ship. It does not apply to air transit. If you are flying, your nationality's normal entry rules apply.
Where can I leave my luggage?
Both airports have a left-luggage counter where you can safely store anything you don't want to carry. If that isn't practical for your timing, we can arrange a secure locker for you at a baggage desk in the Old City instead.

Prices change, so treat these as a guide and check at the counter.
Sabiha Gökçen also has a left-luggage counter — prices differ, so check at the desk. Small cabin bags can ride in the vehicle with you, so you may not need storage at all.
What can I see in a 6-hour layover?
Six hours works from Istanbul Airport, but it is a walking tour of the Old City rather than a museum day. After the transfers you have roughly two and a half to three hours on the ground, which is enough to see the area properly on foot with a guide — and not enough to queue for tickets.
You meet your guide in the Old City and cover:
- Blue Mosque — interior visit, free entry
- Hagia Sophia — from outside (tickets extra, optional)
- Basilica Cistern — from outside (tickets extra, optional)
- Hippodrome — the Serpent Column and the Egyptian Obelisk, free
- Grand Bazaar and the streets around it
- Spice Bazaar and its surroundings
- Optional ferry across to the Asian side if the pace allows
The optional interiors are what stretch the clock. Your guide will tell you on the day whether a ticket queue fits or not, rather than committing you in advance.
What can I see in a 9-hour layover?
This is the window that works properly from Istanbul Airport.

What can I see in a 12-hour layover?
With twelve hours the constraint stops being time and starts being what you want. On top of the Old City there is room for a Bosphorus cruise, the Asian side, or a slower pace with a proper lunch rather than a rushed one.

What happens if my connecting flight is delayed or my tour runs late?
We return you to the airport a minimum of 1.5 hours before your flight departs. That margin is built into the itinerary from the start, not something we try to make up at the end of the day — if traffic is heavy or a site is busier than expected, we cut the last stop rather than the margin.
We also track your inbound flight. If you land late, your guide is still there and the plan is rebuilt around the hours that remain rather than the hours we had planned for.

Sabiha Gökçen costs more because the transfer crosses to the European side — close to three hours of driving for the round trip, against about an hour and a half from Istanbul Airport.
Included: a licensed guide throughout, and a private air-conditioned vehicle with driver for airport pick-up, the transfer both ways, and getting around the city.
Not included: museum entrance fees, meals and snacks, and gratuities.
Entrance fees are quoted separately because ticket prices change and most parties want a different combination of sites. Tell us which of Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace or the Basilica Cistern you want to include and we will give you an all-in figure. The Blue Mosque and the Grand and Spice Bazaars are free to enter.
Frequently asked questions
Where exactly do you meet us at the airport?
Your guide meets you in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name. Exact meeting details are confirmed by WhatsApp before you travel, since the terminal and exit you come through depends on your flight.
Do you track our flight?
Yes. Send us your flight code when you book and we monitor it, so if you land late your guide is still there and the itinerary is adjusted to the time that remains.
Can you handle checked baggage?
Full-size checked baggage is best left at the airport's left-luggage counter. Small cabin bags can ride in the vehicle with you.
What if we have a very early morning or late night layover?
Museums, restaurants and shops are closed, so a walking tour makes little sense. What works instead is a panoramic drive with a Mercedes Vito and a driver — the Bosphorus shore, the illuminated mosques and the bridges, at a time when the city is empty. Message us on WhatsApp with your times and we will suggest a route.
Is it risky to leave the airport during a layover?
With six to seven hours or more, you are fine. What makes it work is planning against your actual flight rather than a generic timetable: we track your inbound flight, build the return leg into the itinerary from the start, and cut the last stop rather than the margin if traffic runs against us. Below six hours at Istanbul Airport we will tell you honestly that it isn't worth leaving.
Do you take card payment?
Payment is in cash. There are ATMs and exchange offices in the arrivals hall at both airports if you need to withdraw on landing.
How many people in a group?
From 1 to 10 guests, exclusive to your party — you are never grouped with other travellers. The price is for the tour, so a couple and a family of six pay the same.
