Istanbul Layover Tours — What You Can See Between Flights

Istanbul has two airports, and which one you land at changes everything. This page gives you the minimum layover you need, the real transfer times, a calculator for your own flight times, and what fits in 7, 8 and 10+ hours — then one page for each case.

How many hours do I need to leave the airport?

7 hours, at either airport. Under that it does not work and we will not do it — the margin disappears into passport control, the two transfers and the time you need to be back for your flight. We would rather say so than sell you a sprint.

The minimum includes everything: 45 minutes from touchdown to the car, the transfer each way, and our 2h 30 return buffer before departure.

Food on the way

Every route has room for an occasional break with a Bosphorus view — tea, a simit, a plate of something — chosen on the day for your route and taste. We never route you to a specific restaurant, and food is at your own cost.

Is Turkish Airlines' free Touristanbul tour better?

Touristanbul is Turkish Airlines' free tour programme for passengers on long layovers.

On Touristanbul you follow a group of around 45 people on a fixed route and a fixed clock. With a private guide you draw your own itinerary. The difference is à la carte versus a set menu.

That said, be honest with yourself about which you want. Touristanbul is free, it is run by the airline, and if the timing slips the responsibility sits with them. For a first visit on a tight budget, that is a reasonable trade. What it cannot do is stop at the one thing you actually came to see, move at your pace, or change plan when your flight lands late.

The eligibility rules matter here. Touristanbul is only for passengers connecting from one international flight to another at Istanbul Airport, on a single Turkish Airlines booking, with a layover of 6 to 24 hours. Codeshare tickets don't qualify. It doesn't run from Sabiha Gökçen at all. You register at the Touristanbul desk on arrival rather than booking online, and your flight times have to line up with one of the four scheduled routes — which were revised on 1 May 2026, so check the current timings against your connection.

If you don't meet those conditions, or your connection doesn't match a tour departure, a private guide is the alternative rather than the upgrade.

Do I need a visa for a layover in Istanbul?

Visa requirements depend on your nationality and change from time to time, so we won't state rules here that might be out of date by the time you read them. Check the official Turkish government site at evisa.gov.tr, or ask us and we will point you to the right page for your passport.

One thing worth knowing: the 72-hour visa exemption you may have read about applies to cruise passengers who arrive and leave on the same ship. It does not apply to air transit. If you are flying, your nationality's normal entry rules apply.

Where can I leave my luggage?

Both airports have a left-luggage counter where you can safely store anything you don't want to carry. If that isn't practical for your timing, we can arrange a secure locker for you at a baggage desk in the Old City instead.

Sabiha Gökçen also has a left-luggage counter — prices differ, so check at the desk. Small cabin bags can ride in the vehicle with you, so you may not need storage at all.

At Istanbul Airport your driver waits in the international arrivals hall with a name sign; at Sabiha Gökçen likewise. Your guide joins you in the city. We return you to the departures drop-off 2h 30 before your flight.

Don't book this if…

• Your connection is under 7 hours — we will say no.
• You must collect and re-check large baggage: the margin gets thin.
• You qualify for Turkish Airlines' free Touristanbul tour, its slot matches your flights, and you are happy in a group — take it.
• Your layover is overnight: an airport hotel is the better spend.

Turkish Airlines' free Touristanbul tour — how is this different?

Touristanbul is Turkish Airlines' free group tour for passengers connecting through Istanbul Airport on a single Turkish Airlines ticket. It is a good programme. Ours is different in five ways: it is private to your party; you choose the route; there is no fixed departure slot to match; your guide is licensed and speaks your language; and if your inbound flight is late we re-plan around the hours you still have instead of leaving without you. If you qualify for Touristanbul and its slot matches your flights, take it — we will say so.

If your connection is at Sabiha Gökçen, read the SAW page — the routing is different and Kadıköy market is quieter on Sunday mornings; ferries thin out in winter.
