Galataport Istanbul Shore Excursions — 2026 Cruise Schedule & Private Tours
Last updated: 24 August 2026
Your ship docks in the centre of Istanbul. Galataport is not an industrial port outside the city — the terminal sits on the Bosphorus in Karaköy, a 10-minute drive from Sultanahmet and a 15-minute walk from Galata Tower. What you can see depends almost entirely on one number: how many hours your ship is in port.
This page lists the 2026 Galataport cruise calendar with hours ashore for each call, and what is realistically possible in that window.
How long does my ship stay in Galataport?
Port calls at Galataport fall into two groups. Short calls run 11–14 hours, in around 07:00–10:00 and out by 18:00–23:00 — enough for the Old City or the Bosphorus, but not both properly. Overnight calls run 28–34 hours, which opens up options no day-call passenger can consider, including domestic flights to Ephesus or Cappadocia.
Check your ship below before booking anything.

How far is Galataport from Sultanahmet?
Sultanahmet is 15–20 minutes from Galataport by private vehicle, or about 30 minutes by tram. Traffic on the Galata Bridge can stretch the drive in the morning, which is why we build the transfer time into the itinerary rather than assuming a fixed number.
The nearest tram stop is Tophane, a 3-minute walk from the terminal — not Karaköy, which is further along the shore. Tophane is on the T1 line, which runs directly to Sultanahmet in about 30 minutes.
On foot, Galata Tower is about 20 minutes from the terminal, uphill for the last stretch. Allow up to half an hour at a relaxed pace.
Allow about 20 minutes to clear the terminal itself, from ship's gangway to the street. On an 11-hour call that is 40 minutes of your day gone before the tour begins, so we set pick-up times against your ship's arrival rather than a fixed clock.
What can I see with an 11–14 hour call?
One region, done properly. The mistake most day-call passengers make is trying to combine the Old City and the Bosphorus and seeing neither. Pick one.
Old City (Sultanahmet): Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, Basilica Cistern, Grand Bazaar. Topkapı alone absorbs 2.5–3 hours if you include the Harem and Treasury.
Bosphorus and the European shore: private boat, Dolmabahçe Palace, Ortaköy, the Asian side at Kadıköy or Üsküdar.
Pricing
Half-day and full-day private tours start from 270 USD / 240 EUR per tour, not per person.
Included: private air-conditioned Mercedes with driver, used solely by your party, and a licensed guide throughout.
Not included: museum entrance fees, lunch and snacks, and gratuities.
Entrance fees are quoted separately because ticket prices change and most parties want a different combination. Ask us for an all-in figure covering any of:
- Hagia Sophia
- Blue Mosque
- Topkapı Palace and the Harem
- Basilica Cistern
- Grand Bazaar / Spice Bazaar
Group size: from a single passenger up to 10. The vehicle is matched to your party — a Mercedes sedan or van for smaller groups, a larger van for parties up to 10. The price above is for the tour, so a couple and a family of six pay the same for the same itinerary.
What can I do on an overnight call?
This is where Galataport becomes unusual. With 28–34 hours you have an evening in the city and a second morning, and you can leave Istanbul entirely.
Ephesus by air. Flights to İzmir take roughly one hour. With an overnight call there is time to fly out in the morning, tour Ephesus and the Terrace Houses with a licensed guide, and return the same evening. This is not possible on a day call and almost no operator sells it.
Evening Istanbul. Sunset on the Bosphorus, dinner in Karaköy or Kumkapı, and the Old City after dark when the mosques are lit and the crowds are gone. Ships that sail at 21:00 or 22:00 the following day leave the whole first evening free.
What happens if my tour runs late and the ship sails?
We return you to the terminal a minimum of 1.5 hours before your ship sails. That buffer is built into the itinerary from the start, not something we try to make up at the end of the day — if traffic is heavy or a site is busier than expected, we cut the last stop rather than the margin.
Your sailing time is confirmed in writing with your booking, along with the ship's name, so the schedule is checked against your actual departure and not a general assumption.
Is a private tour better than the ship's excursion?
Honestly, not always. The ship's own excursion carries a guarantee: if it runs late, the ship waits. That guarantee has real value, and if it matters most to you, book with the ship.
What a private tour gives you instead is a smaller group, a schedule set around what you want to see rather than a coach timetable, and generally more time at each site rather than more sites. Ship excursions typically run 30–50 passengers; ours are exclusive to your party, from 1 to 10 guests, and you are never joined by strangers.
Booking independently means the timing responsibility is ours, which is why the buffer policy above is stated in writing before you pay.
Do I need a visa to leave the ship in Istanbul?
In most cases, no. Cruise passengers who arrive at a Turkish port and leave again on the same ship are exempt from visa requirements for up to 72 hours, with permission granted by local security authorities — the cruise line arranges this by submitting the passenger list in advance, so you do not apply for anything yourself. This includes staying overnight on board.
Two things to be aware of. The exemption is generally understood to cover the city where your ship docks; passengers travelling beyond the port city or staying longer than 72 hours may need an e-visa depending on nationality. And a small number of nationalities fall outside the exemption entirely.
Because cruise lines sometimes advise differently from the Turkish authorities, confirm your own situation with your ship's front desk and check the official site at evisa.gov.tr before sailing. If you are booking our Ephesus tour, which involves a domestic flight out of Istanbul, ask us and we will confirm what applies to your passport.
Which cruise lines dock at Galataport?
Celebrity Cruises, MSC, Costa, Viking, Royal Caribbean, Oceania, P&O, Aroya and others call at Galataport through the 2026 season. Aroya sails a Gulf-focused itinerary — we guide in Arabic as well as English, Russian and Turkish.
Frequently asked questions
Where exactly do you meet us?
Outside the Galataport terminal, directly opposite the Hafız Mustafa café. Your guide will be holding a sign with your name.

How many people in a group?
From 1 to 10 guests. The tour is exclusive to your party — you are never grouped with other travellers.
Are entrance fees included?
No. Museum tickets are quoted separately, because prices change and most parties want a different combination of sites. Tell us which of Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace and the Harem, or the Basilica Cistern you want to include and we will give you an all-in figure. The Blue Mosque and the Grand and Spice Bazaars are free to enter.
Is lunch included?
No. Lunch, snacks and gratuities are not included, which keeps the tour price the same whether you want a long sit-down meal or a quick street-food stop. Your guide will suggest options that fit your schedule.
Can you handle a wheelchair or limited mobility?
A wheelchair can be provided on request for an additional fee — tell us when you book. Be aware that Sultanahmet is largely cobbled and Topkapı Palace is built across sloping courtyards, so some sites are harder going than others. Tell us about any mobility needs in advance and we will build the day around what works rather than promising everything.
Do you take card payment?
Payment is in cash. There are ATMs at Galataport and throughout Karaköy if you need to withdraw on arrival.
What if our ship arrives late?
We wait. Your guide and vehicle stay at the terminal until you are ashore and ready, at no extra charge. We then adjust the itinerary to fit the time remaining, keeping the 1.5-hour return buffer intact — so you lose a stop, not the tour.
