A 7-hour layover in Istanbul
Seven hours is the shortest connection we will take out of the airport. This page covers Istanbul Airport (IST); from Sabiha Gökçen the routing is different. Take away 45 minutes for passport control, 1h each way for the transfer and our 2h 30 return buffer, and you have about 1h 45 standing in Sultanahmet. That is enough for a real walk with a guide; it is not enough for a ticket queue. Under 7 hours we say no — it does not work, and we will not do it.
Why no paid entries is the right call
On a short layover the queue is the enemy, not the distance. Hagia Sophia's visitor line alone can swallow forty minutes. So this programme deliberately has no tickets: the Blue Mosque is free, the Hippodrome is an open square, and Hagia Sophia is seen from the outside with the story told by your guide. You see more, you stress less, and you are back at the airport when we said you would be.
The route
Your guide meets you in Sultanahmet after the transfer. Blue Mosque interior (outside prayer times — we plan around them), the Hippodrome with the Egyptian Obelisk and Serpent Column, then Hagia Sophia from the square and the Fountain of Ahmed III. If the day allows, a short pause with a Bosphorus view for tea or a snack — your choice, your cost, no fixed restaurant.
What we will not try to squeeze in
The Grand Bazaar, Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern belong on the 8-hour and 10-hour pages. Promising them at seven hours is how layover tours end in a sprint back to the gate.

Where we meet and where we return you
Your driver meets you at the arrivals hall of Istanbul Airport with a name sign after passport control; your guide joins in Sultanahmet. We return you to the departures drop-off at IST 2h 30 before your flight.
Don't book this if…
- Your connection is under 7 hours — the maths does not work and we will tell you so.
- You want to go inside Hagia Sophia or Topkapı — choose the 8-hour or 10-hour programme instead.
- Your layover is at Sabiha Gökçen — read the SAW page; the routing is different.
- You need checked baggage collected and re-checked — that eats the margin on seven hours.
Turkish Airlines' free Touristanbul tour — how is this different?
Touristanbul is Turkish Airlines' free group tour for passengers connecting through Istanbul Airport on a single Turkish Airlines ticket. It is a good programme. Ours is different in five ways: it is private to your party; you choose the route; there is no fixed departure slot to match; your guide is licensed and speaks your language; and if your inbound flight is late we re-plan around the hours you still have instead of leaving without you. If you qualify for Touristanbul and its slot matches your flights, take it — we will say so.
If your connection is at Sabiha Gökçen, read the SAW page — the routing is different and Kadıköy market is quieter on Sunday mornings; ferries thin out in winter.

Frequently asked questions
How much time will I really have in the city on a 7-hour layover?
About 1h 45 on the ground in Sultanahmet, after 45 minutes for passport control, two 1h transfers and a 2h 30 airport buffer.
Can I go inside Hagia Sophia on a 7-hour layover?
We do not plan it. The queue is unpredictable and would risk your flight; Hagia Sophia is seen from outside on this programme.
Is a 6-hour layover enough for a tour?
No. Under 7 hours we do not leave the airport and we will not offer a tour.
