Sultanahmet Istanbul

The Historic Heart of Istanbul

Sultanahmet is the beating heart of historic Istanbul — a neighborhood where 1,500 years of history are concentrated in a remarkably compact area. This is the ancient Hippodrome of Constantinople, the center of both the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, and today the most visited district in Turkey. For Gulf Arab travelers, Sultanahmet offers an unparalleled immersion into Islamic and Ottoman heritage.

Must-See Landmarks

Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya) — Originally built as a Christian cathedral in 537 AD, converted to a mosque after the Ottoman conquest in 1453, briefly a museum, and restored as a mosque in 2020. Its massive dome, Byzantine mosaics, and Islamic calligraphy make it one of the most architecturally significant buildings in the world.

Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Camii) — Built between 1609 and 1616, this mosque is famous for its six minarets and its interior decorated with over 20,000 handmade İznik blue tiles. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times — modest dress is required.

Topkapi Palace — The main residence of Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years. The palace complex includes four courtyards, the famous Harem, the Imperial Treasury (housing the Topkapi Dagger and the Spoonmaker's Diamond), and stunning views over the Bosphorus.

Basilica Cistern — An underground water reservoir built by Emperor Justinian in 532 AD, supported by 336 marble columns. The atmospheric lighting and the famous Medusa head columns make this a hauntingly beautiful visit.

Practical Tips for Gulf Visitors

Sultanahmet is very walkable but can be tiring on hot days. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water. Halal food is everywhere — from street vendors selling simit and kebabs to sit-down restaurants along Divanyolu Street. The Arasta Bazaar behind the Blue Mosque is quieter than the Grand Bazaar and offers quality Turkish ceramics and textiles at fair prices.
